Baycol
Baycol was an extremely popular prescription-only
drug designed to lower consumer’s cholesterol. First approved
for use in the United States in 1997, approximately 700,000 people
in the U.S., and more than six million people worldwide, used Baycol
since it was introduced.
In August 2001, Bayer Pharmaceutical, the manufacturer
of Baycol, withdrew the drug from the market due to numerous debilitating
illnesses linked to Rhabdomyolysis, and more than 100 consumer deaths.
Rhabdomyolysis is a serious and sometimes fatal illness
that causes muscle cells to break down, and get released directly
into the bloodstream. Symptoms of Rhabdomyolysis include weakness,
tenderness, fever, dark urine, muscle pain, nausea and vomiting.
The most affected areas of the body are the lower back and calves,
and in certain cases, patients with Rhabdomyolysis develop Kidney
or other organ failure, which could result in death.
According to the FDA (Federal Drug Administration), the two groups
most at risk of Rhabdomyolysis are the elderly, and those using
Baycol in conjunction with the drug, Gemifibrozil.
National lawsuits have been filed against Bayer, Glaxo Smith-Kline
and others in 50 federal courts. These lawsuits state the deaths
and injuries described above are a result of people taking Baycol.
If you or someone you care about has ever taken Baycol and experienced
symptoms of Rhabdomyolysis, you may be entitled to a cash award.
