Consumer bankruptcy experience and familiarity with Best Case Bankruptcy software are both significant pluses, but neither is required. We are looking for an organized, dependable, and client-focused professional who enjoys working as part of a team and helping clients through the bankruptcy process.

About the position

Brock & Stout Attorneys at Law is seeking a Bankruptcy Legal Assistant to join our team in our Birmingham, Alabama office.

The Bankruptcy Legal Assistant will work closely with our attorneys, paralegals, and other legal professionals to assist clients throughout the Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy process.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with prior consumer bankruptcy experience or for a motivated legal professional who is interested in developing specialized experience in bankruptcy law.

Prior consumer bankruptcy experience is a significant plus but is not required. Experience with Best Case Bankruptcy software is also highly preferred but not required. We are willing to train the right candidate who demonstrates strong organizational skills, attention to detail, professionalism, and the ability to provide excellent service to our clients.

Bankruptcy clients are often dealing with significant financial stress. The ideal candidate will be patient, compassionate, organized, and comfortable communicating with clients while helping attorneys and other members of the bankruptcy team keep cases moving efficiently.

Candidates with strong administrative, financial, banking, accounting, customer-service, or other detail-oriented professional experience may also be a good fit even without previous bankruptcy experience.

Compensation

Pay is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Prior consumer bankruptcy and Best Case Bankruptcy experience will be taken into consideration.

Responsibilities

  • Assist attorneys and other members of the bankruptcy team with Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 cases
  • Communicate with clients regarding documents, appointments, case requirements, deadlines, and other routine case matters
  • Help clients understand what information and documentation they need to provide
  • Collect, organize, review, and maintain financial documents and other information needed for bankruptcy cases
  • Assist with gathering information regarding income, expenses, assets, debts, creditors, and financial history
  • Enter and maintain accurate client and case information in the firm's case-management and bankruptcy software
  • Assist with the preparation of bankruptcy petitions, schedules, statements, amendments, and other case documents under attorney supervision
  • Review files for completeness and identify missing documents or information
  • Follow up with clients regarding outstanding documents and case requirements
  • Assist attorneys with preparation for meetings of creditors, hearings, and other bankruptcy proceedings
  • Maintain calendars, deadlines, appointments, and other case-related tasks
  • Prepare correspondence and routine case documents
  • Communicate professionally with clients, attorneys, trustees' offices, court personnel, and other parties as appropriate
  • Maintain organized electronic case files and accurate case notes
  • Work closely with attorneys, paralegals, and other legal assistants to keep cases moving efficiently
  • Provide clients with professional, responsive, and compassionate service throughout the bankruptcy process
  • Perform other administrative and legal-support duties as needed

Required qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Prior experience working in a law firm, professional office, or client-service environment is preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn new software and systems
  • Ability to accurately enter, review, and maintain detailed information
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, deadlines, and priorities
  • Dependable and able to follow established procedures
  • Comfortable communicating with clients by telephone, email, and in person
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive client information appropriately
  • Professional, patient, and compassionate approach when working with clients
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
