Congenital and Rare Diseases and Social Security Disability

Congenital and rare disorders, including conditions that may be evaluated under several body systems or Compassionate Allowances.

Adult Listing 10.00 addresses certain congenital disorders that affect multiple body systems. Many rare diseases have no dedicated listing. Social Security may still find disability if the medically determinable impairments — alone or combined — meet or equal a listing, or if residual functional capacity rules out substantial work.

Some rare conditions appear on the Compassionate Allowances list; others do not. We verify CAL status against the current SSA list and do not assume a rare diagnosis is a CAL condition.

  • Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome

    POTS is an orthostatic-intolerance syndrome without a dedicated SSA listing. Evaluation centers on objective diagnosis and supported limits from tachycardia, dizziness, syncope, fatigue, and cognitive symptoms.

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

    A progressive motor neuron disease evaluated under Listing 11.10. Adult ALS is also on SSA’s Compassionate Allowances list for expedited case processing when the documented diagnosis meets applicable rules.
