SSDI is insurance you paid for with work credits. SSI is a need-based program with income and resource limits. Adults on both programs have to meet the same medical definition of disability. A diagnosis name is not an approval.
This page asks the nonmedical questions people actually get wrong: Did you work long enough? Are you working at substantial gainful activity now? Could countable resources be over SSI’s limit? We do not add up quarters of coverage. If that is the open question, SSA’s own earnings record is the source — not a website form.
Read SSDI and SSI for the practice overviews, and the Conditions Center for how listings and residual functional capacity work.

Data last verified: 2026-09-19. Calculation version 2026.09.1.
How the calculation works
Your answers branch the explanation. Work at or above SGA is flagged because it can block a disability finding. High resources flag SSI, not SSDI. Limited work history flags insured status as the first SSDI question.
What this result does not tell you
It does not say you qualify. It does not score a listing. It does not decide disabled adult child benefits, which are a different Title II claim on a parent’s record.
Relevant legal rules
Adult disability is in the Social Security Act and 20 C.F.R. § 404.1520 (five-step evaluation). SSI financial rules are separate. 2026 SSI federal benefit rates and resource limits are shown as context only.
Example
Someone with a long work record and a checking account under SSI’s resource limit may need to look at both programs. Someone who has never worked enough to be insured may still look at SSI if the financial rules can be met.
What you may want to do next
If work credits or SGA are the worry, use the SGA checker and then request a disability case evaluation. Bring medical providers and a work history, not a printout of this page.
How Brock & Stout can help
Our Social Security Disability team looks at both the medical file and the nonmedical rules. We represent claimants in Alabama, Georgia, and nationwide. We cannot promise SSA will approve a claim.

FAQs
Yes, when SSDI is low enough that SSI financial rules still have room. SSA calls that concurrent benefits. This guide does not compute the offset.
Not automatically. SSA looks at countable earnings compared with SGA, and at whether the work is an unsuccessful work attempt or done with extra help. Use the SGA checker for the published dollar amount.
