SSDI back pay is unpaid months between the first month SSA will pay and the month benefits actually start. Two rules do most of the work:
1. There is generally a five-month waiting period after onset. If you became disabled after the first day of a month, that wait starts the next month. ALS is a statutory exception. 2. SSA may pay up to 12 months before the application month, and never before the first payable month after the wait.
You have to enter a monthly benefit amount. This site cannot compute your Primary Insurance Amount from earnings. Use an SSA letter or SSA.gov estimate. The result is a range, because false precision is worse than a round number.
SSI back pay follows different rules and is not calculated here.
Interactive tool
Data last verified: 2026-09-19. Calculation version 2026.09.1.
How the calculation works
The tool counts payable months after the wait, cuts off months more than 12 months before you applied, multiplies by the monthly amount you typed, and rounds to a hundred-dollar range.
What this result does not tell you
It does not subtract attorney fees, workers’ compensation offsets, public disability benefits, or SSI. It does not add auxiliaries (children or a spouse). It does not know whether SSA will agree with your onset date. Established onset is SSA’s finding, not the date on this form.
Relevant legal rules
Waiting period and first month of entitlement are described on SSA’s approval-process page. Retroactivity of a disability application is in POMS and SSA’s public FAQ (up to 12 months before you apply). ALS waiting-period relief applies to SSDI approved on or after July 23, 2020.
Example
SSA’s own example: disability began June 15, 2023, application July 1, 2023. The first payable month is December 2023. This tool uses that same calendar math.
What you may want to do next
If you already applied, keep treatment current and talk with our disability team about the file — not about locking in this dollar range. If you have not applied, onset and the application date both matter; waiting can shrink retroactivity.
How Brock & Stout can help
We help claimants through initial applications, reconsiderations, and hearings. Back pay, if awarded, is calculated by SSA. We cannot promise an amount.

FAQs
Because we do not have your PIA, COLA months, offsets, or SSA’s onset date. A range is more honest than $8,437.23.
SSI does not use the SSDI waiting period. SSI also does not pay the same kind of 12-month retroactivity. Do not mix the two.
